Which of the famous personalities belonged to the extremist phase of modern history?

Correct answer: Bal Gangadhar Tilak

Explanation: The correct answer is D. Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Bal Gangadhar Tilak was one of the most prominent leaders of the extremist phase in the Indian national movement, which emerged in the early 20th century. This phase marked a shift from moderate methods like petitions and prayers to more assertive and radical approaches aimed at attaining Swaraj (self-rule). Tilak famously declared, ‘Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it,’ which became a powerful slogan for freedom. Along with Bipin Chandra Pal and Lala Lajpat Rai, he formed the famous trio called ‘Lal-Bal-Pal’, who inspired many Indians with their fiery speeches, writings, and nationalist activities.
